Greek seamen announce 48-hr strike

A statement released on the website of Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation said that the strike was scheduled to begin on Monday and would last until Thursday, DPA reported.

Ships and ferries across the country are expected to remain anchored at ports, disrupting all services throughout the industrial action.

The protest was announced after negotiations regarding state funds between the union on one side and Labor Minister Giorgos Koutroumanis and Merchant Marine Minister Anna Diamantopoulou on the other broke down.

Greece has the highest debt burden in proportion to the size of its economy in the 17-nation eurozone. Despite austerity cuts and bailout funds, the country has been in recession since 2009.

Greeks have been protesting against the state’s austerity cuts since early 2011 when the government first implemented the measures.
