Greek lawmakers fail to elect president

Greek lawmakers have failed to elect a new president in the first of three rounds of voting before the end of the year.

The parliament, tasked with electing the president in an indirect election, voted 40 short of what was enough for an outright win on Wednesday.

Stavros Dimas, the government’s candidate, got 160 votes while 135 MPs voted against him and five were absent.

In the second round, scheduled for December 23, the government’s candidate will also need 200 votes to win.

If the pro-austerity government, led by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, fails to meet the threshold, its nominee would need 180 votes for the third round, set to be held on December 29.

The government holds only 155 seats and will need independent and opposition lawmakers to back Dimas.

If it yet fails to meet the mark, early parliamentary elections would be the probable outcome.

“There are another two rounds ahead of us,” Samaras said following the Wednesday vote, adding, “I hold hope that a [new] president will be elected.”

The Greek premier also warned that failure to elect a president could be fatal to the country.

“The conditions are difficult for the country, and I am certain that lawmakers are aware that the country must not enter troubled times.”
