Samaras called for a meeting at 1600 GMT Monday with the leaders of the socialist and moderate leftist parties in his coalition, who were angry about the government’s sudden decision and demanded immediate restoration.
The premier’s allies have warned him to reverse the decision as the coalition could collapse if he carried on with the closure of the broadcaster that led to nationwide protests in Greece and international condemnations.
Samaras, however, accused his coalition partners of “hypocrisy” and said the job cuts were part of austerity measures needed to keep access to the country’s bailout loans.
“The elimination of 2,000 public sector jobs between now and June was signed up to by all the heads of the three parties of the governing coalition,” he said on Sunday, adding, “From where should we cut these jobs apart from the undeserving ERT … one of the bastions of obscurity and privileges?”
On Friday, the Prime Minister offered to partially reinstate the broadcaster with “a small number of (ERT) employees,” but his coalition partners rejected the offer.
The broadcaster’s television and radio stations were suddenly shut down late on June 11. The move, which is part of the Greek government’s unpopular austerity measures, left ERT’s nearly 2,700 staff suspended.
The Greek government claimed ERT had become a “haven of waste.”
ERT began broadcasting in 1938, running three domestic TV channels, four national radio stations, as well as regional radio stations and an external service, Voice of Greece.
