The family of an elderly grandfather who was bashed with a baseball bat as he went for his morning walk has offered a reward of $3000 to anyone with information on the “cowardly” attack.
Bunbury police said the 88-year-old grandfather was walking along Hamilton Road about 4.30am when two men in a small black car pulled up alongside him.
The passenger, armed with a baseball bat, got out of the car and approached the man.
Police say the attacker demanded money and when the elderly man replied he did not have any, he was assaulted with the bat.
The victim suffered injuries to his head and was knocked unconscious.
When he regained consciousness, he walked back to his Eaton home a short distance away and called police.
Detective senior sergeant Jon Munday said the seemingly random, opportunistic attack was “extremely cowardly”.
“It was a very callous act,” he said.
“It is mind boggling… what reason would these men have to hit the gentleman.
The victim was taken to the Bunbury Regional Hospital for treatment and has a fractured jaw.
His family has offered a reward of $3000 for anyone with information about the incident.
Witnesses to the attack are urged to contact Bunbury police on 9722 2111.
