‘Govt. behind 1990 Republican killing’

The Police Historical Enquiries Team (HET) found in its investigations that eight undercover army soldiers were on the lookout in their cars at the scene but did not opened fire at the attackers or launch a chase after they gunned down the three republicans outside a police station in Lurgan, County Armagh.

The HET also did not reject the possibility that the police may have submitted intelligence to the Ulster Volunteer Force, which claimed the attack, on the exact time when the trio would leave the police station.

The three were on bail on charges of possessing ammunition and left the station after one of their regular singing-in sessions, which were part of their bail condition.

The investigations showed even two soldiers followed the trio on foot before the gunmen opened fire but there was no reaction from the soldiers.

This comes as the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) and the government denied at the time any link between the shooting and the suspicious red Austin Maestro car at the scene, which has now appeared to have been carrying undercover soldiers.

According to the inquiry, the RUC tried to hide the fact that soldiers were present at the scene by “misleading or incomplete” statements while the force also lost evidence from the gangsters that could help in forensic investigations into the issue.

The soldiers who had followed the trio on foot later claimed that they were 50 to 100 yards behind them and could not see the attack in which gunmen fired 49 bullets.

Of the three high-profile republicans who were shot, Sam Marshal was killed.

Following the HET report, his family have announced they are to launch a book next week detailing hitherto unknown evidence on his murder.

“As a result of information and facts concerning Sam’s killing which we have discovered in recent times, we are now convinced that members of British state forces, including British military intelligence and the Special Branch, were directly involved in the planning and commission of his murder,” a family spokesman said.

“This book will also reveal how the most senior ranking members of the RUC and British government ministers lied… the book exposes the existence of an official state cover-up marked by British duplicity, deception and denial which began in 1990 and which continues to the present day,” he added.
