THE GOVERNMENT is to chase 700,000 householders who have yet to pay the €100 charge, according to the agency charged with raising the funds.
Figures released by the Local Government Management Authority show that just over 924,880 paid the charge before the March 31 deadline.
The figures also show that 40,282 properties registered and paid penalties and interest after that date to the tune of between €11 and €13.
More than 17,000 properties have registered for waivers.
Over 1.6 million properties are eligible for the charge, according to Census 2011.
With about €90m collected to date, there is a considerable shortfall if the €160m expected is to be raised.
The controversial charge was introduced by Environment Minister Phil Hogan with a protest charge organised at the Fine Gael Ard Fheis earlier this year.
