Sources in the Far Eastern factories that build hi-tech components for companies such as Google, Apple and Amazon have hinted that Google’s upcoming own-brand tablet will be seven inches, as opposed to iPad’s 9.7.

The sources in Google’s supply chain believe that Google will launch the own-brand tablet PC in March or April, according to a report in Digitimes.

It will reportedly feature a seven-inch panel, run Google’s Android – unsurprisingly – and will retail at less than $200, the same price as Kindle Fire.

That would pitch the gadget squarely at the market for Amazon’s Kindle Fire – ie it would be a large entertainment device, not a ‘laptop replacement’ such as Apple’s 9.7-inch iPad or Samsung’s 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab.

Google has recently made moves into selling music, films and books, so such a move would make sense.

Digitimes has a reasonable track record for spot-on leaks, but is given to a certain amount of speculation – the site has written 50 articles on iPad 3 alone, according to reports.

‘Sources from Google’s upstream supply chain believe that Google, instead of Apple, may actually be targeting Amazon’s 7-inch Kindle Fire as its major competitor,’ says Digitimes.

‘However, Google Taiwan commented that the company has never heard about the plan of launching an own-brand tablet PC.’

The denial rings slightly hollow – in
an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Serra, Google
executive chairman Eric Schmidt reportedly said, ‘In the next six
months, we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality.’

Apple’s
iPad 3 is widely expected to appear in Spring of this year,
armed with hi-tech features such as a screen reportedly at a far higher 2048×1536
resolution – similar to the Retina display in iPhone – and very likely a
quad-core processor more akin to the ones found in high-end laptops.

It
isn’t clear whether Schmidt’s comments specifically refer to an
own-brand tablet, but tech insiders have interpreted Schmidt’s comments
as meaning Google will bring out a tablet equivalent to its own-branded
Nexus Android phones.

Whatever technologies Google uses, it will have to work hard to overtake iPad 3.

The tablet is reportedly already in production at Apple’s Chinese suppliers.

The
screen resolution – reportedly equal to the sharp Retina display in
iPhone, but much larger – could be a huge selling point for the tablet
in a market crowded with similar screens.

The new iPad 3 will reportedly  offer resolutions four times higher
than the current model.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the company has already placed orders for 1.5 million such screens.

Whether or not the iPad 2 will offer a quad-core processor, similar to high-end laptops, is still being debated.

Some
sources say that the launch is just too close to the launch of the
upcoming iPhone 5, and both will ship with versions of the current A5
processor in iPad 2.

Hopefully a number of things that 99% of tablets fail on. 1 – capcative multi touch screen. 2 – ram (4gb for OS) not just for storage. 3 – sdcard capability. 4 – a webcam that you can actually do video over the net on, not just take photos. 5 – the ability to support a flash site and Facebook properly—————–
5 little points that would make a tablet actually worth it, instead of the usual well it nearly does what you need….

As google make android which is used on all tablets not made by apple and blackberry one has to question what they are bringing to the market unless this is the first step of google cutting out the middle men like Samsung and HTC and are now going to go it alone and have devices they make, hardware and software.

Competition to iPad can’t even get a decent device out there for a RRP of over £600. Dread to think what kind of rubbish $200 will offer.

This will with luck help lower the retail price of Ebooks. Competition has always been healthy for the consumer.
I though am eagerly waiting for a firmware update for my Android powered Asus Transformer tablet. Honeycombe is great, but Icecream Sandwich will
realy kick a–…
Already, the Google Device knocks spots off the iPad. Bring it on google.

For $200. That will be £200 in rip off Britian
