Peter Nolan Google’s logo today sports an image of Maria Mitchell. Google celebrates holidays and other occasions with a different logo. Today’s logo is an image of a more obscure person, Maria Mitchell, who was an american astronomer. She is known for discovering a comet by using a telescope in 1847.

Miss Mitchell was an astronomer in a day when women weren’t as often in the work force. Her parents, however, were interested in giving her as much education as boys, because of their Quaker religion.
