Golf club, bat used in taxi attacks: court

An 18-year-old man allegedly used a golf club and a baseball bat as he and a gang attacked Melbourne taxi drivers during a string of late-night robberies.

Nine teenagers, including five boys as young as 14, have been arrested over the attacks on five cabs.

Leloaloa Mitchell Pitone, 18, of Sunshine, faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with a host of armed robbery and assault offences.

Police charge sheets tendered in court allege Pitone stole thousands of dollars’ worth of wallets, phones and cash from several cabbies while brandishing a baseball bat and a golf club, and intentionally caused serious injury to a driver.

Police say all the teenagers, including one girl, face multiple robbery charges over a series of attacks that left drivers terrified.

“It’s extremely concerning,” Superintendent Rick Nugent told reporters on Tuesday, noting the youth of the arrested group.

“It’s a very violent crime that’s been committed on these taxi drivers and it’s very concerning that people of this age are involved in that sort of activity.”

Police allege the group used stolen cars to box in taxi drivers from midnight to 1.30am on Monday in the city’s western suburbs.

The arrests were made after four search warrants were executed in the western suburbs on Tuesday morning.

Pitone also faces charges relating to the destruction of two cars in a separate incident at Footscray West on June 16.

Magistrate Ann Collins said she acknowledged concerns by Pitone’s defence counsel that his age and appearance could make him vulnerable if locked up, but ordered he be remanded in custody to reappear in court on September 11 for a committal hearing.

Pitone showed no emotion throughout the brief filing hearing.

Four boys – a 14 and 16-year-old from Sunshine West, a 14-year-old from Deer Park and a 17-year-old from Brooklyn – were remanded in custody. All are facing at least four counts of armed robbery and two counts of attempted armed robbery.

A 16-year-old Kings Park girl has been released pending further inquiries, while two men aged 20 and 21 have been bailed by police on charges of handling stolen goods.
