Golf club attack mayor resigns in NT

The Northern Territory mayor convicted of attacking three of his neighbours with a golf club has resigned.

Palmerston mayor Robert Macleod will step down on Friday after his reputation was badly damaged by a court hearing that found him guilty of attacking three of his neighbours in October last year.

After finding him guilty Magistrate Sally Sievers said Macleod had lied in evidence and attempted to blacken his neighbours’ reputations by calling them “neighbours from hell”.

The mayor had claimed self-defence.

In a strange twist to the saga the NT News reports that Palmerston’s deputy mayor Geoff Carter is under police investigation for appearing nude on his property in front of two girls.

“We understand, yes its private property, but the windows are right there and the lights are on,” one of the girls told the newspaper.

The youngest girl was under 12 and said it was the most disgusting thing she’d ever seen.

Mr Carter, aged 65, reportedly said any nudity was absolutely not of a sexual nature and he was in the privacy of his own home.

The Palmerston Council voted against installing Mr Carter as mayor to replace Mr Macleod, instead giving the job to another alderman.

Macleod will be sentenced on February 27 and prosecutors have asked that he be sent to prison.
