The new mayor of the Gold Coast has attacked the federal government’s new carbon tax, calling on councils to join him in a boycott.
Following Tuesday’s Senate estimates hearings on the 104 local governments that could be liable to pay the carbon tax, Tom Tate said he would continue to do everything he could to ensure his council won’t have to pay the tax.
“Gold Coasters are struggling with higher costs of living, fewer jobs and an economy that is lagging,” he said in a statement.
“The Australian government is going to ask us to collect a carbon tax from residents simply because they want to use a dump or landfill facility.”
He wanted to tell Prime Minister Julia Gillard it wasn’t on.
“We won’t be a collection agent for the world’s largest carbon tax and I call on every other council on the list to boycott the tax.”
