Give peace a chance: Argentina to UK

As Hague launched Britain’s annual review of human rights in London, Argentina’s news ambassador to the UK, Alicia Castro, used the opportunity to remind Britain of its insistence on refusing to sit at the table of negotiations despite calls from the international community, reported Huffington Post UK.

“Seeing that the United Nations and the international community and a large group of Nobel Prize winners urge both countries to (start) negotiations in order to find a pacific and permanent resolution, my question is: Are you ready for dialogue? Are we going to give peace a chance?” said Castro.

“Thank you. That’s enough. Stop”, Hague interrupted Castro.

Speaking with reporters afterwards, the Argentinean ambassador questioned the nature of Britain’s annual review of human rights as she said being open to negotiation forms the basis of democracy.

“You cannot say that you are so good at human rights and democracy if you are not open for dialogue”, she told reporters.

The disputed Malvinas islands are located 250 nautical miles from Argentina and were occupied by the British in 1833. The archipelago is among the 16 territories, 10 of which being under the sovereignty of the UK, on the UN Committee on Decolonization’s list of colonies awaiting liberation.
