Girl, 4, dies after Sydney road accident

A four-year-old girl has died after being hit by a four-wheel drive on a busy inner Sydney road.

Paramedics were called to the intersection of Quarry and Harris streets in Ultimo just after 11am (AEST) on Tuesday.

The preschooler was taken by ambulance to Sydney Children’s Hospital in a critical condition and is believed to have died on arrival.

Police say the 41-year-old driver was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

He was assisting officers with their inquiries.

Sydney City Central Inspector Dave Richards said a crash investigation team was yet to officially determine the cause of the incident.

However, AAP understands the girl had been walking with her mother when her hat blew off and she darted into traffic to chase it.

Witnesses told News Limited that the girl was struck at a crossing as two mothers were walking together with prams.

“There were two mums walking together with prams and their kids,” one witness said in a report on The Daily Telegraph website.

“One of the mums was pregnant but she wasn’t hit and neither were the prams.”

In a separate accident on Tuesday afternoon, a 10-year-old boy suffered a broken leg when he was hit by a taxi in nearby Redfern.

Police believe he had chased a football onto the road.

Redfern Inspector Victoria Beresford said the driver was not considered to be at fault.

“The 10-year-old boy ran out on the road chasing a ball,” she said.

The 56-year-old taxi driver was questioned at the scene and returned a negative result in a roadside breath test.
