Gingrich: US must wipe out Iran govt.

“We should indicate calmly and decisively that any threat to close the Straits of Hormuz would be considered an act of war and we will eliminate the government of Iran,” Gingrich said on Tuesday.

Gingrich, who is infamous for his hawkish anti-Iran stance, said on Monday that Israel should not warn the US before attacking Iran, because the US administration cannot be trusted to keep the information secret.

“If I were the Israelis, I wouldn’t give this administration one minute’s notice, because someone will leak it. When you have an operational secret, you want to keep it as close hold as possible,” added the belligerent US presidential hopeful.

Gingrich has adopted a militaristic and fierce anti-Iran stance in his campaign, openly displaying his bellicose demeanor and harshly criticizing the administration of President Barack Obama because of its ‘moderate’ policies towards Tehran.

Speaking at the Republican presidential debate on November 12, 2011, Gingrich, the former speaker of the US House, explicitly advocated “maximum covert operations” against Iran including assassinating Iranian scientists.

He also called for “actively funding every dissident group in Iran.”

On December 8, 2011, Gingrich said he would resort to “covert capability” to bring about “regime replacement” in Iran and sabotage Iranian refineries “everyday.”

In an interview with the CNN early in December, Gingrich said that if elected president, he would opt for a joint military campaign with Israel against Iran.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program, using this pretext to impose sanctions against Iran and threaten the country with military attack.

Iran has denied the allegations and promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the region.
