Immigration Minister Chris Bowen says he has no doubt Prime Minister Julia Gillard will lead the Labor Party into the next election.
Ms Gillard’s leadership has come under increasing pressure since the High Court last week invalidated the government’s plan to send asylum seekers to Malaysia.
“Julia Gillard is very firmly the leader of the Labor Party and she will continue to be and she has the firm support of the caucus. She’s got a big job as the prime minister of Australia and she has our full support as she goes about doing it,” Mr Bowen told the ABC’s Insiders program.
He said every prime minister goes through periods of unpopularity.
“This prime minister is no different to the previous prime ministers who go through difficult periods. But that doesn’t mean that she won’t be leading the party to the next election because I believe she will be.”
School Education Minister Peter Garrett said everybody he speaks to recognises the government is going through a difficult spell but is also fully supportive of Ms Gillard.
“We will continue to do what we ought to do as government: argue the case, prosecute the opposition and deliver the policies that we think are good for the country,” Mr Garrett told Sky News.
He rejected any suggestion that Kevin Rudd should return to the leadership.
“The prime minister has the support of the caucus and the ministry. And even if you are going through a difficult period, the right thing for a political party to do is to recognise that it has to focus on the job at hand.
“We are supporting Julia Gillard absolutely.”
Former prime minister John Howard said it had been a terrible week for Ms Gillard but he stopped short of saying she should resign.
“It would be gratuitous of me to suggest she do anything. That really is a matter for the Labor Party. Is it fatal? You never know in politics,” Mr Howard told the Ten Network.
“I don’t think the prime minister’s got any real authority. That is because she failed to win a majority in her own right at the 2010 election which was the one thing that would have validated her overthrow of Kevin Rudd.”
