Prime Minister Julia Gillard has warned the Senate it has a “very stark choice” to make over legislation legalising the Malaysia people-swap deal.
Her warning comes with another boat carrying about 100 suspected asylum seekers intercepted in Australian waters late on Wednesday.
“This is the only bill that has the option of passing the parliament today,” Ms Gillard told the Nine Network of draft laws the lower house approved on Wednesday night that allow asylum seekers to be processed offshore in any country party to the Bali framework.
“There’s a very stark choice for senators today.
“Either they vote for this bill and we will leave this parliament with laws so we can process people offshore or they continue to play politics and we end this parliament with nothing effective done.”
