Gillard to move out of The Lodge shortly

Prime Minister Julia Gillard will move out of The Lodge within months as it undergoes repairs and renovations.

Seven News has reported extra security measures have been put in place at the prime minister’s Melbourne home, where she is expected to spend more time over the four-month renovation period.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said the extra security was not related to the Lodge renovation timetable.

But the government is also expected to find Ms Gillard and her partner Tim Mathieson alternative accommodation in Canberra.

The couple also have the option of spending more time at Kirribilli House in Sydney.

The Lodge, an 85-year-old heritage-listed building near Parliament House, requires major works to preserve it and prevent further deterioration.

According to the tender documents the full project includes: replacement of the slate roof, removal of hazardous materials, electrical rewiring, replacement of the guard houses, replacement of the heating and air-conditioning, plumbing repairs, fire protection and stormwater repairs.

A notice sent to neighbours of The Lodge says construction works will take place from July to October, a shorter timeframe than initially planned.
