Gillard rejected MP Kelly’s resignation

A second senior Labor MP has admitted he offered his resignation to Prime Minister Julia Gillard after informing her he intended to vote for Kevin Rudd in Monday’s leadership ballot.

Parliamentary secretary Mike Kelly, the member for Eden-Monaro, said he made the offer after cabinet minister Anthony Albanese gave an emotional media conference on Saturday indicating he had told Ms Gillard he would be voting for Mr Rudd and had tendered his resignation, which she had not accepted.

Dr Kelly said he came close to resigning from parliament altogether, but was convinced by Mr Albanese’s address that the government had a positive agenda and could win the 2013 election.

“I had a very similar conversation with the prime minister to the one Anthony Albanese had,” Dr Kelly said on Friday.

“I did advise her of how I was voting and made the same offer that he did, which she said was unnecessary and rejected.

“So I continue to perform that work and am very pleased to do so.”

Dr Kelly said he believed the caucus vote, which Ms Gillard won 71-31, had “cleared the air” and the government now needed to focus on selling its policies.
