Prime Minister Julia Gillard says the Victorian government is walking away from investment in education with cutbacks to the state’s TAFE sector.
Ms Gillard was addressing a public forum at a community cabinet meeting in Berwick, in the Victorian marginal seat of La Trobe.
Ms Gillard said there were real fears in the training sector stemming from cutbacks announced in the Victorian government budget.
“We absolutely share your concerns that as we continue to invest and invest more money, at the same time we are seeing premier (Ted) Baillieu and his government walk away from that kind of investment in education,” she said in response to a question from a member of the public at the packed forum.
Tertiary Education Minister Chris Evans said he had written on behalf of the federal government to the Victorian government seeking assurances the training effort would not be undermined.
“The TAFEs are advising me they’re likely to close campuses, lay off staff and not offer the sort of training that is required,” he said.
“That’s contrary to the agreements we have in place to grow training in Victoria.
Senator Evans said if the reforms went ahead, rural and regional areas and areas of lower incomes would be hardest hit.
The community cabinet meeting, held at Timbarra college, also dealt with questions about education more generally, mental health, solar energy and the carbon tax.
One attendee asked why Casey, considered one of the growing regions, missed out on the national broadband network (NBN).
The minister in charge of the NBN, Stephen Conroy, said every Australian would eventually be linked to the network.
Another attendee asked why Australia was getting a carbon tax at triple the rate of other nations with the tax.
Climate change minister Greg Combet said Australia had to play a fair part in the global effort to reduce emissions.
“We are one of the top 20 emitters internationally of greenhouse gases and we are the highest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions per person amongst the developed economies.”
