A new video calls on Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to “get out of the way” on the issue of same sex marriage.
Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young launched the video in Sydney on Sunday, ahead of federal parliamentary debate on the marriage reforms.
The Greens’ video accuses Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott of being on the wrong side of history over the reforms that would allow same-sex couples equal rights under the law.
“Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott are holding back reform and simply delaying the inevitable with their staunch opposition to marriage equality,” Ms Hanson-Young told reporters.
Ms Gillard has said she will vote against the marriage reforms, although Labor MPs will be allowed a conscience vote.
Coalition MPs will have to cross the floor if they want to vote in favour of same-sex marriage.
“The prime minister’s opposition to equality is stopping MPs from all sides from voting yes, and Tony Abbott’s blocking of a free vote is standing in the way of marriage equality passing the parliament this year,” Senator Hanson-Young said.
She said the leaders were out of step with what the majority of Australians want.
