Giant Food, a supermarket chain which services Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Delaware, has awarded The Maryland Food Bank with a $900,000 grant, to pay for both food and staffing costs related to the program, along with facilities modernization of the food bank’s Bauer Community Kitchen and the purchase of two vans for food delivery.
The Maryland Food Bank, established in 1979, is responsible for both the procurement and distribution coordination of food donations from manufacturers, wholesale and retail suppliers and government agencies, to state-wide agencies who provide free food to the state’s hungry. The Summer Food Service Program operates 70 locations across the state and supplies breakfast and lunch to over 3,000 children on a daily basis to children who are dependent upon free or reduced price meals during the school year. The program helps to alleviate child hunger during the summer months when school is not in session.
Despite America’s abundance, child hunger continues to plague our most vulnerable. The Maryland Food Bank is just one example of how communities are working hard to help those in need.
