nsnbc : Boris Ruge, Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Embassy to the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on German support for demining operations in Manbij, Syria, at the US State Department.
The MoU was signed on Wednesday at the US Department of State. Boris Ruge, Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Embassy to the United States, noted that Germany will contribute 2 million euro to support ongoing operations for the removal of explosive hazards in Syria’s northern city of Manbij.
US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces – primarily the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Women’s protection Units (YPJ) liberated Manbij from the self-proclaimed Islamic State.
The presence of the Kurdish – dominated SDF has since led to tensions and conflict between Turkey and the USA / YPG-YPJ. Turkey designates the YPG/YPJ as terrorist organizations allied and on par with Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK).
Even though ISIS has been driven out of Manbij mines and other explosives left behind still pose a considerable threat to civilians as well as to SDF – YPG – YPJ or US forces in the city and its surroundings.
It is worth noting that the German government has limited its participation in the Syrian war to observation flights and support of missions such as the demining operations in Manbij.
