Germany security agency head quits

Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said in a statement on Monday that Heinz Fromm announced his decision to take early retirement from the end of the month.

Friedrich said that Fromm “was distressed about the mistakes by employees in his authority.”

The resignation came several months after the National Socialist Underground (NSU) was blamed for a murder spree of 10 people, mainly Turkish immigrants.

Eight Turks, a Greek and a policewoman were killed by the group. Four suspects arrested in connection with the murders have been freed from custody in the last two months.

The case surfaced in November when two members of the NSU were found dead in an apparent suicide pact and the other turned herself in.

The internal intelligence agency has come under pressure over how the group could operate with impunity for 11 years and the government has admitted gross errors by the security services.
