German workers continue major strike

On Friday, tens of thousands of workers in the federal states of Bavaria, Hesse and Lower-Saxony walked out of their jobs in strikes demanding increases in employee salaries.

The walkout prompted massive disruptions throughout Germany with commuters facing difficulty getting to work as tram, train and bus services were delayed or out of service.

Kindergartens remained closed, garbage collection was halted, and hospitals were running with minimal staff.

At least 7,000 people have protested at a single rally in the capital city of Lower Saxony, Hanover, where public services continue to suffer.

“The situation in our hospital is very tense. We just earn too little, there’s too few personnel. And all we’re told is that there’s nothing there, but we don’t believe it. For our work, we want adequate pay,” said Ulrike Alberg, from the Clinical Center Region of Hanover.

The recent strike followed another nationwide walkout earlier in the week, in which thousands of German public sector workers walked out of their jobs after demands for wage increases were blocked during talks.

Unions have demanded a 6.5-percent pay increase – at least 200 euros a month – for the two million employees working for federal governments and local authorities, which employers have dismissed as unrealistic.

Employers have criticized the strikes as mere provocation after only one round of negotiations. However, union groups have already agreed over the recent years to pay-freezes in exchange for job security.

“It was the employers who provoked us. They could have made an offer but didn’t, and only demanded the unions to lower demands but we won’t budge,” a protester said.

The strikes are expected to continue throughout the country for the rest of the week. Negotiations between the employers and the unions are set to be resumed March 12.
