Police said there were indications that the police officer, identified as Detlef G, has eaten parts of the dead man, who lived in Hanover, central Germany, and had been reported missing.
Authorities believe the two men met via an internet site for those interested in sex with torture.
According to police, the 59-year-old victim was found tortured and dismembered and his body parts were found buried on land which belonged to the alleged killer.
The suspect works for Saxony’s State Office of Criminal Investigation in the forensics department. German media reported that he is an expert in handwriting analysis.
The suspect claimed that he killed the man at his request. Police said that some body parts of the victim were missing, and they presume that cannibalism took place.
German authorities said Friday that the suspect is believed to have fatally stabbed the victim at his home in the eastern state of Saxony on November 4, about a month after they first met in an Internet chat room, chopping up the body and burying some pieces in his garden.
The alleged killer was arrested Wednesday at his workplace in Dresden. Police searched the man’s property and the suspect reportedly showed them several places where he had buried body parts.
