nsnbc : The German government noted that it doesn’t expect to see any of those of Turkish President Erdogan’s bodyguards who were involved in uncivilized beatings of protesters in Washington, during his visit to the upcoming G-20 summit in the German city of Hamburg on July 7 – 8.
Eleven people were hurt when Erdogan’s bodyguards brutalized peaceful protesters during hi visit to the U.S.-American capital earlier this year.
The embarrassing affair further increased tensions between the United States and Turkey and drew international attention, including in Germany.
German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schäfer said on June 26 that he could “assume with good conscience that these people who have been incriminated by the U.S.’s judicial authorities won’t set foot on German soil in the foreseeable future”.
The German Federal Criminal Police (BKA) said earlier that foreign powers “do not hold sovereign powers” while on official visits stressing that “foreign colleagues only have the right to self-defense”.
The issue is extremely sensitive in Germany, not merely because of “cold air” in diplomatic relations between Ankara and Berlin, but because of bitter experiences with the consequences of body guards of “foreign dignitaries” beating up protesters.
The demeanor of Erdogan’s bodyguards, during Erdogan’s visit to Washington and in General, is reviving painful memories about the “beating Persians” during the visit of the Shah of Iran to Berlin in 1967, and the fatal shooting of student leader Benno Ohnesorg by a German police officer during protests.
It was one of those many “key experiences” that led many a young German political activist to the conclusion that Germany and its law-enforcement had not drawn the necessary consequences from the Nazi past – an experience that contributed to the radicalization of many, and the for many at that time correct conclusion that one cannot resist against tyranny while the people are unilaterally disarmed.
