German forest boy ‘is fantasist’ who made up tragic tale

Now he is in the care of the German social services, at a cost of an estimated
£5,000 a month, and it seems that his secrets may never be unlocked.

“He wants no publicity and we have nothing more to say on this subject,”
said a spokeswoman for youth authorities in Berlin. “We will not enter
into discussions about secrecy or otherwise. There will be no more
information forthcoming on this case.”

Police have gone to extraordinary lengths to check out his story. A search of
police computers in all 16 states of Germany
found that no one by the name of Doreen had died in a car crash in the past
decade.

No sign of a grave has been found in searches of forests in the Harz
Mountains, along the Bavarian-Czech border or in Thuringia – densely
forested areas that were identified as the likeliest within a two-week walk
of Berlin.

“Ray” has been unable to pinpoint the forest where he said he lived,
or to say what nationality he is. Officials originally thought he could be
British because he spoke English but only basic German, but have since
dismissed this. The tent he carried did not look as if it had sustained five
years of use in a forest and Ray was well dressed and clean.

He has shunned all appeals to be photographed or make an appeal for relatives,
leading to suspicions that he comes from a country outside the EU and came
to Germany seeking work or benefits. He says he will be 18 in June, although
how he knows this is unclear.

It is also unclear what Germany will do with him. He cannot be deported
because he has no known country of origin, and if he is mentally ill, the
state will continue to care for him.
