Gerard Baden-Clay spends first night in jail

Gerard Baden-Clay has spent his first night in prison under medical observation as he faces a long wait before going on trial.

The accused murderer spent Wednesday night in a Brisbane watchhouse but was transferred to the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre in western Brisbane yesterday.

Baden-Clay, who is accused of killing his wife Allison, will spend at least the next week in custody as he awaits a Supreme Court bail hearing on Thursday next week.

If his bail application is unsuccessful Baden-Clay could face up to two years in custody before going to trial, the Courier-Mail reports.

Queensland Chief Justice Paul de Jersey has called on the State Government to appoint a new judge to deal with the rising number of homicide cases.

A sharp rise in murders, manslaughters and attempted murders, as well as drawn-out trials like that of Jayant Patel, has left Queensland’s justice system buckling.

“If a criminal case were to become ready to proceed to trial in the Supreme Court today, the earliest available trial dates would be in the first half of next year,” Justice de Jersey said.

“A number of factors explain that delay. Most seriously, substantially more alleged homicides are going to trial.”

After undergoing a routine medical assessment, Baden-Clay was fed a dinner of beef stroganoff and penne pasta on his first night in jail.

The disappearance of Mrs Baden-Clay on April 20 sparked a massive search before her body was found on the bank of a creek 10 days later.
