Upper Hunter MP George Souris says by joining the Nationals for a tilt at Federal politics, Richard Torbay is clearly disassociating himself from the tarnished Independent brand.
Yesterday Mr Torbay announced his intention to contest the Federal seat of New England as a National against Independent MP Tony Windsor.
The Federal seat overlaps with Mr Torbay’s current seat of Northern Tablelands which he won as an Independent.
Mr Souris says Mr Torbay has a good shot at unseating Mr Windsor if he stands for re-election.
“I look forward to seeing Richard run whether it’s against Tony Windsor or whether Windsor doesn’t run again,” he said.
“But either way this is a very clear demonstration of the damage that Windsor and also Mr Oakeshott in the other seat of Lyne on the coast have done to the brand of Independents.
“They are far from independent.”
