The students in typography know well the name of Herb Lubalin who is anchored to ITC Avant Garde Gothic typeface, which is in the textbooks and still popular logo font. However, while the earliest typefaces connect to historical persons which biographies are part of history of typography, Herb Lublain’s fonts are very recent and his name does not sound enough historical. In fact the life is running and 20th century is even not most recent history, a term reserved now for the beginning of 21st century.

The genealogists know, it is not always easy to locate people in the US Census records. However, Herb(ert) Lubalin was registered just at age 1 (1920 Census) and easy to find online. Two more registrations are also available without mistakes in deciphering which is usually a reason not to find our ancestors.
