Geelong Cats get second Vic govt funds

The Victorian government has gifted a further $1.5 million to the Geelong AFL club to upgrade its stadium after a miscalculation in the cost of the project.

The new funds come on top of the $25 million the government has already contributed to the $49 million project.

Geelong’s plans to upgrade its home ground, Simonds Stadium, hit trouble when it discovered a $12 million shortfall in the tender process.

The club was forced to scale down the size of the project, contribute an additional $2 million of its own funds and request further government help.
