GC keeps eye on Iran elections campaign

Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei also said Thursday that the council would take proper measures to deal with any campaign offenses.

He said that in case of minor offenses, judicial bodies will see into them and proper decisions will be consequently made to tackle the problem.

The official, however, noted that the council may vet the candidates again if their campaign offenses are major and could affect the result of the elections.

The official electoral campaign started on Thursday and it will end 24 hours before the voting starts on March 2.

The GC, tasked with vetting candidates as well as supervising elections, approved the competence of more than 3,400 candidates competing for 290 seats at Iran’s Parliament (Majlis).

On February 21, Iran’s Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said that 48,288,799 people are eligible to cast their ballots in the upcoming vote.

He added that more than 47,000 polling stations will operate nationwide during the elections.
