Gay parents deny children birthright

A Queensland group says laws permitting same-sex couples to have children through surrogacy deny children the right to be raised by both a mother and a father.

The Family Council of Children was responding to the launch of a lobby group protesting moves to ban same-sex couples from having children through surrogacy.

The Liberal National Party (LNP) government has announced its intention to ban gay couples, singles and new de facto couples from having children through altruistic surrogacy.

Toowoomba doctor and Family Council of Children spokesman David van Gend said it’s the birthright of every child to have a mother and father.

“Does this lobby group only care about equal rights for gay activists, but not equal rights for defenceless children?” Mr van Gend said in a statement.

He said the laws introduced by Labor in 2011 violate the UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) international convention on the rights of the child, which state a young child shouldn’t be separated from its mother.
