Gay marriage must happen: Clegg

In an online video message for the Out4Marriage campaign, Clegg reiterated his commitment to redefining marriage saying the current debate is about “when” not “if” to change the definition of marriage.

“We brought forward our proposals; they have provoked a heated debate. But these are proposals about when and how to open up civil marriage to gay and lesbian couples. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ anymore”, said Clegg.

The Westminster government has proposed to change the law allowing same-sex couples to marry in the same way as heterosexuals. If the proposals become law, couples of the same sex would be allowed to marry in a register office or other civil ceremony.

Earlier this month, the Church of England formally objected to the plans saying such proposals could lead to the biggest rift between the Church and the state.

“We believe that imposing for essentially ideological reasons a new meaning on a term as familiar and fundamental as marriage would be deeply unwise”, said the Church.

Moreover, last month, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Owen Paterson became the first Cabinet Minister who openly opposed the proposals.
