Gas plant attacked in NW Pakistan

The attackers fired rocket propelled grenades and mortar shells at the plant in the town of Karak, which is situated about 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Islamabad, on Saturday evening.

A firefight broke out between the gas plant’s security guards and the armed assailants after the compound came under attack. A tanker parked on the premises was destroyed in the assault.

The assailants later fled the scene and their whereabouts are unknown. Law enforcement forces cordoned off the area after the incident and launched an investigation.

Over 35,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US in the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media outlets.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan.

Thousands of people have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
