Gas pipeline bombed in SW Pakistan

Local officials say the incident occurred in Pirkoh area of the Dera Bugti district late Wednesday when an 8-inch diameter natural gas pipeline was detonated with an explosive device, halting gas supplies to the region’s purification units.

Security forces cordoned off the area and began search operations for suspects.

Balochistan has the largest reserves of natural gas and mineral wealth in Pakistan.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which is widely blamed on Baloch separatists.

The group has been involved in decades of fighting for an ethnic homeland in the impoverished but mineral-rich Balochistan, which also supplies much of Pakistan’s natural gas.

In the past few months militants have destroyed dozens of gas pipelines and power towers in different parts of Balochistan.
