Gas pipeline attacked in SW Pakistan

Local officials say the incident occurred in Pirkoh area of Dera Bugti late Monday when an 8-inch diameter natural gas pipeline was detonated with an explosive device.

As a result of the blast, the gas pipeline was destroyed, suspending gas supply from well no 41 to the Sui Gas Purification Plant.

Security forces cordoned off the area and began search operations for suspects.

Balochistan has the largest reserves of natural gas and mineral wealth in Pakistan.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police officials put the blame on Baloch militants, who have carried out similar assaults in the past.

In the past few months militants have destroyed dozens of gas pipelines and power towers in different parts of Balochistan.

Some Baloch militant groups say they want greater political autonomy and a share of the province’s natural resources.
