‘Gang members active in US military’

The footage demonstrates Assault Breacher Vehicles back in 2011 demolishing Afghan property under the excuse of clearing the pathways for troops and vehicles through minefields.

However, the images taken during the operation show that the US Marine vehicles were opening new routes through residential areas.

Afghan residents were also forced to evacuate the area prior to the operation.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Paul Sheldon Foote, a professor at California State University, Irvine, to further discuss the issue. The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: The footage shows how Afghan property including houses and gardens is being destroyed by US explosives in their so-called mine clearing activities. Why are such violations of human rights not taken seriously or even reported for that matter?

Foote: It’s a long history of war. If you tell soldiers that these people are demons, do you think the property has any value? We have a long history of this.

In fact, the opposite would be a surprise. The film “Is Paris Burning?” when German generals in Paris would use to burn Paris, the opposite is the norm.

We have a long history of soldiers and Marines not caring either to protect property from looting by people living in the country or damaging it themselves.

Press TV: We’ve seen the US military make one mistake after another, some say it’s institutionalized within the occupational sources, with the Qur’an burning incidences, the killing of civilians, and now we’re showing footage that residential property is being destroyed by the US-led forces.

Can they even afford to do something like this considering anti-US sentiment is already at an all-time high and there are major questions on the legacy that these forces are going to leave behind once they do actually leave?

Foote: No, this is “not winning the hearts and minds”, which is an expression that was around even when I was an army officer in Vietnam. You cannot behave like this. People who have not been in war zones, since I have, haven’t seen what these people are like.

It’s under the current volunteer military that we have in America; it’s extremely easy to get in the military. In fact, there are even gang members who are active in the military.

The Marines have a culture — I was in the army. They had a much stricter culture than the Marines did. The Marines could get away with almost anything.

Press TV: Do you see this being pursued at all by the military commanders in Afghanistan to ensure that such property and rights of Afghans are respected in the days to come considering there will most likely be an uproar in the Western media now that the videos have been leaked?

Foote: It’s very difficult for a single officer to watch the people under him who are off in 10 different locations doing different things. In a war zone, control is extremely difficult so I would expect these unfortunate and terrible things to continue by people who are proud of their bad behavior.
