Galaxy Poll puts Labor on course for a wipeout

THE Gillard government’s support plummeted in the wake of Kevin Rudd’s failed leadership challenge last month to a new low of 30 per cent.

The majority of voters now also believe that Prime Minister Julia Gillard is looking increasingly desperate to cling on to power at any cost and that the independents should now force an early election.

In a deepening personal leadership crisis for Ms Gillard, the majority of voters now believe that she lacks political judgment and has failed to act swiftly enough to resolve the dual scandals of Craig Thomson and Peter Slipper.

An exclusive Galaxy Poll commissioned by The Daily Telegraph has revealed Labor’s primary vote has nose-dived from 34 per cent in February to just 30 per cent now, while the Coalition’s has risen to 49 per cent. On a two-party preferred basis, the Coalition now has a lead of 56 per cent to 44 per cent. An election result on these numbers would wipe Labor from the political map. A majority of voters, 52 per cent, believe it is time for the independents to back the Coalition in a no confidence motion, forcing the nation back to the polls.

“Support for federal Labor has slumped as voters take the view that the Gillard government is motivated more by desperation than a commitment to good government,” Galaxy CEO David Briggs said.

“Overall, 58 per cent of voters believed that Labor was now showing signs of doing anything to cling to power with only 37 per cent believing the government was acting in the national interest.”
