Gabon PM resigns after vote

“I went to tender my resignation from the government to the head of state,” Paul Biyoghe Mba said on Monday after meeting with President Ali Bongo, who will decide whether to return him to office.

In Gabon, the president can appoint and dismiss the prime minister, the cabinet, and judges of the independent Supreme Court.

On Sunday, Gabon’s constitutional court confirmed the massive win achieved by President Bongo’s Gabonese Democratic Party (GDP) in the elections held in December 2011.

The party won over 100 seats in the 120-member parliament, with six constituencies due to poll again in the equatorial African country.

Turnout in the December elections was hardly 35 percent as the polls were boycotted by a coalition of parties allied with the opposition National Union. The opposition criticized the absence of biometric methods that they say ensure a free and fair vote.

It is not clear whether Bongo will reappoint Biyoghe Mba, who came to power in July 2009.

Analysts say that Biyoghe Mba can put forward his resounding election victory and the successful hosting of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations as feathers in his cap.
