$43 million will be allocated to upgrading the Bells Line of Road in the upcoming state budget.
There have been ongoing calls for the winding crossing over the Blue Mountains to be converted into an expressway.
Transport for NSW is currently investigating a potential corridor link between the Bells Line and the Sydney Motorway Network.
The Deputy Premier, Andrew Stoner, says the money will be used to start the process of straightening the road and eventually making it dual carriageway.
“A significant portion of that funding will be around the planning, so that we get that right,” he said.
“The other portion will be for works to do some of those realignments and put in some more overtaking lanes on the Bells Line.”
The Bells Line Expressway Group says it will now be calling on the Federal Government to also allocate money to the road.
The chairman, Ian Armstrong, says he is delighted at news of the state funding.
“The need, which is enormous, has at long last been recognised by a government.
“The Bells Line Expressway Group, which I have chaired for many years, will be continuing to press the Federal Government now to do like as the State Government is doing.”
