Queensland’s Environmental Defender’s Office is the latest victim of the Newman government’s razor gang, losing funds to help communities fight miners and developers.
There is no legal aid for environmental cases in Queensland but the organisation’s lawyers are able to assist with a growing number of problems with coal seam gas, coal dust, development and other issues.
Lawyer Jo-Anne Bragg says she learned on Wednesday that $97,000 in state funding ended on June 30, despite six months notice being required for any change.
The money is half of the body’s recurrent funding, which pays for two lawyers and the publication of a popular “litigants handbook” to help people negotiate courts.
Ms Bragg says she will now have to seek donations.
“Within six to 12 months we will seriously have to curtail our operations,” she told ABC Radio on Thursday.
Fifty people are on the EDO waiting list.
Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie has been approached for comment.
