Full 2012 Oscar nominee list: Hugo and The Artist lead this year’s nominees

We just finished watching the live nominee announcements for the 84th annual Academy Awards. The nominations were quite enlightening, to say the least. 2011 was a year without many standout films. Usually we go into these awards with an idea of what might be nominated, but this year, almost anything was up for grabs. They also confirm a point Roger Ebert made in his predictions piece yesterday: many of the nominations this year are all about film nostalgia. From The Artist, which is a black and white silent film to Hugo, which is about the beginning of movies themselves, many of the biggest nominees are from films that celebrate the history of the medium. My Week with Marylin and Midnight in Paris are also deeply nostalgic films. The Descendants, The Ides of March, and The Iron Lady were also nominated, proving that anything George Clooney or Meryl Streep star in will pick up at least one nomination.

We’ll have to save the deep predictions and trends for another time, but we’ve fixed up and presented the full list of nominees below. For your entertainment pleasure, we’ve also included a list of films that got the most nominations. The 84th annual Academy Awards air on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 7pm EST. Be sure to grab a pillow because they probably won’t end until midnight.
