Friend of balcony fall man lashes out

Police had to hold back a friend of a Sydney man who fell off an eighth-floor balcony after he turned on a news cameraman.

VIDEO: Man ‘lucky to survive’

The agitated scenes unfolded as friends were standing by an ambulance vehicle about to take 34-year-old Michael Collins to hospital last night.

One of them approached the cameraman and a physical altercation ensued before two police officers ushered the man away.

Mr Collins remains in a critical condition in an induced coma at St Vincent’s Hospital after rupturing his spleen and shattering his pelvis.

It is believed he was hosting post-Christmas party drinks at his apartment in Darling Point, in Sydney’s east, yesterday afternoon when he tried to perform a stunt on the balcony.

He held onto the balcony’s wet railing and jumped over, hoping to land on the ledge.

But witnesses told police he lost his grip, slipped and fell on to grass about 25 metres below.

A man living on the same floor as Mr Collins is amazed his neighbour survived.

“Luckily, he landed inside the wall on some fairly soft grass which has had a fair bit of water on it. So I’d say that would have cushioned the blow,” John Lyons told Nine News.
