Fresh strikes hit Frankfurt airport

The GdF union for air traffic workers announced Sunday as the start of the five-day strike, after pay talks between its representatives and the management of Fraport, the airport operator, collapsed.

The strike initially began on February 16, when apron controllers who direct aircraft in and out of their parking positions stopped performing their duties.

The wage dispute centers around 200 personnel.

Despite the strike last week, 80 percent of the flights were running according to Fraport. The airport operator expects to maintain the same level of flights during the newly announced strikes.

Yet, Lufthansa, the largest airliner in Europe, have cancelled 140 of its flights for Monday.

Workers at the airport are demanding pay rises, increased bonuses and reduced working hours. They have also asked for outsourced employment to be relocated to a single company on a single contract.

Fraport, however, says it will not bow down to “unreasonable” demands.

The airport is Europe’s third largest in terms of passenger count.
