French school shooting ‘national tragedy’

Sarkozy suspended his election campaign on Monday to visit the scene of the killings and announced a minute of silence in all French schools on Tuesday.

“We should not back down in the face of terror,” Sarkozy said.

Sarkozy also vowed to find the perpetrator saying “You cannot murder children like this on the territory of the Republic without being held to account.”

On Monday, A man on a motorbike opened fire on a group of people standing at a school drop-off point, killing four bystanders, including three children. The perpetrator of the attack has reportedly fled the scene.

Latest reports indicate that a school teacher and his two children were among the terror victims. The assailant was armed with two weapons, one of which was previously used in fatal shooting of three French soldiers.

Days earlier, in an identical incident in the same region, three paratroopers were gunned down by an unknown individual on a motorbike.

Following the attack, French Interior Minister Claude Gueant ordered heightened security measures around all Jewish schools in France.

France is home to the largest Jewish community in Europe. Around 700,000 Jews reside in the country.
