French PM makes ‘dreadful’ gaffe while wooing Germany

The German chancellor has been angered by, in what she regards as a betrayal,
Mr Hollande’s opposition to EU austerity measures she has championed as the
solution to the euro debt crisis.

The French President has been infuriated by German lectures over the state of
the French economy and a suggestion last week by Wolfgang Schaeuble, the
German finance minister, that Germany draws up a report on how France can
restore competitive ness and cuts its high government debt levels.

French sensitivity was illustrated on Friday by a furious government response
to a magazine cover portraying France as a “time-bomb at the heart of
Europe”.

Mr Ayrault lashed out at the Economist’s cover which showed seven “baguette”
loaves of bread held together by a French tricolour with a lit fuse
protruding from the centre. The cover was accompanied by an editorial
raising concerns that Mr Hollande’s economic reforms are not ambitious
enough, jeopardising the future of the euro.

“You are talking about a newspaper which is resorting to excess to sell
paper. I can tell you that France is not at all impressed,” he said.
