French, Americans fearful of econ. crisis

The poll, conducted across five developed countries–France, Germany, China, Russia and the USA– by the Ifop institute asked people about the economic situation.

79 percent of those questioned in France said they believed the country is still in the middle of a financial crisis, while 52 percent of Americans agreed.

China, Russia and Germany all scored between 35 and 38 percent.

When asked if their country is well placed in the global economy, just 40 percent of Americans agreed. This compares to 65 percent of Chinese and 61 percent of Germans.

According to the poll almost nine out of ten Chinese believe the country is well-prepared for its economic growth in the future, while in France only four out of ten believing the country has done enough to stay competitive.

“The French know they have a problem in the modern world,” the head of polling at Ifop Jérôme Fourquet said.

The survey result confirms the fact that Germany has coped with the economic downturn much better than other western countries.

As Europe’s richest economy, Germany must contribute more than any other country in the eurozone’s bailout mechanism, which have been agreed by EU leaders.

It is obvious that Germany will demand more power in Europe in future for helping troubled economies such as Greece and Spain.
