The federal opposition has called on the government to abandon plans to scrap free flights home for single Australian Defence Force personnel over the age of 21.
From July, only defence force members under the age of 21 will be eligible for the free flights while on recreation leave, an entitlement that has been in place for decades.
Opposition defence personnel spokesman Stuart Robert is not impressed.
“The commonwealth is happy to post (people) to literally anywhere in the country, a long way from home,” he told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.
“It’s not much to ask that the commonwealth actually make sure that they can come home and see their families, especially at Christmas and birthdays.”
The expected savings from the measure are estimated to be about $15 million annually.
The government introduced the legislative instrument to disallow free flights for 22,000 personnel into parliament’s lower house late on Monday night.
The coalition has now responded by giving notice of a disallowance motion of its own.
Mr Robert said the issue should be decided by parliament before it breaks for the long winter recess on Thursday.
