Vast and dazzling arcs of light in the night sky over Caboolture yesterday had residents panicked and even sparked some alien invasion fears.
But the source of the blue, green and purple flashes seen in the region, north of Brisbane, was more prosaic — a fallen power line.

“Wow is all I can say,” local witness Lindsay Burrows posted on Facebook.
“The light show went on for a good 5 mins! started off mild but was turning the whole sky vibrant blue in flashes then stopped a min or so after the power went off.”
Stephanie Killeen posted about her fears of a UFO encounter: “We were driving home the whole friggin sky lit up green and blue thought aliens had landed it was really scary.”
But a spokesman with Queensland power company Energex said the real culprit was a 20m span of downed wire that caused a domino effect along power lines and activated high-voltage protection systems over an area of 3.5km.
“It created those flashes of light and loud bangs that people reported,” the spokesman said.
The incident cut power to 10,500 homes and businesses from 8.30pm AEST to about 10pm.
The Energex spokesman said there was no obvious cause for the downed power line.
